Coppell Cup Success ..

On a cold April morning, archers from Wales and beyond gathered to the field, to attend Wrexham Bowmen’s premier contest of target archery skill, ‘The Coppell Cup’.

The Coppell Cup is a celebration and remembrance of the Bowmen’s founding member, the Late Mr Brian Coppell.

Archers of all disciplines were represented, from the very modern to the traditional; Olympic Recurve, Compound, Recurve Bare bow, Longbow, American Flat bow even a Horse Bow were present on the field.

The diversity of styles, was matched by the ages of the competitors; it ranged from the very young to the very not so young, equally the level of experience and skill too.

As the Sun rose finally, to warm cold fingers, the first arrows flew, and the serious competing began, which lasted the whole day. However serious the archery, a spirit of camaraderie pervaded the competition, shown by the friendship and jollity of all present. That spirit of camaraderie particularly, is present within Wrexham Bowmen Archery Club which is it’s strongest asset and the reason for it’s longevity.

Mr Coppell would no doubt be proud to see an event in his name so richly attended and a club still going strong after 40 years. A club which is very much, a true family of archers.

Wrexham Bowmen thanks all who attended, the volunteers who braved atrocious weather to prepare the field; the ladies who made and provided the essential refreshments. And finally to Mary, Brian’s wife, an excellent Longbow archer herself, valued coach and committee member, we hope you enjoyed the day and we give our eternal thanks.

The Clubs that attended were: Wrexham, The Longbow Club, Gronant, Bowbrook, Bruntwood, Croessewallt, Corus, Bebbington, Caldy and two independent archers.
